CAVERSHAM BOROUGH COUNCIL.

Th? ordinary meeting of the Caversham Borough Council was held last evening; pre-sent-The Mayor (Mr J. Wilson), Crs Burgess, Rutherford, R. Wilson, Carpenter, Colo, M'Pherson, Bridgmoii, itustoii, Bedford, Ewing, and Middleton. The Finance Committee reported that £108 Cs lid bed been lodged in the bank since last meeting, and recommended accounts amounting to 2s 3d on tho general account, £17 103 6tl on the water supply account, £30 as 6d on the sanitary rate account, and 12 Cd on the Hospital rate account for payment. llio Drainage, Water, and Sanitary CommiUeo reported that Mrs Tonkinson's letter had been referred to the Drainage Board, The committee, having considred letters from the health officer and the Caledonian Society with reference to a nuisance on tho Presbyterian Church Board land between the railway and tne Caledonian grounds, referred them to>the sanitary inspector to act.—Adopted. Tho Inspector reported that the kerbing and channelling of Bridgeman street were completed, with the exception of portion at tho mud tanks, and that would be completed as soon as the Drainage Board finished the tanks* The kerbing and channelling of Royal Terraco had been commenced.—Adopted. Frederick Taylor, in reply to tho council's letter stating that the survey of his section. (50, St. Clair Park) was correct, wrote that tho survey cut through the glass house belonging to the council's tenant, and as he wanted to , fence the section he desired the council to ha-vo the glass house removed or elso give an acknowledgment that it was on "his land.—The Mayor said a survey had been made, and it showed the glass house to bo a foot oil Mr Taylor's grouud.*-It was resolved to certify tho land in tho Lands and Survey office. John Rogers, C.E. wrote applying for tho position of supervising engineer in connection with tho tramway construction in the borough. —After some little discussion tho letter was ceived. Councillors did not seem to be very clear whether the City of the Borough Council would be required to pay for supervision.—Tlio Mayor said he thought it only natural the borough should pay.

John Sidey wrote requesting the council to clear gorso from the roads in the vicinity of his property as per agreement with him.—Tho Mayor said it was new to tho council to know that it had an agreement with Mr Sidey. Landholders were required to clear to half the width of roads adjoining their properties. Ho moved that the matter should be referred to tho Works Committee for report.—The motion was carried.

Mondy, Sim, and Stephens forwarded a general plan of the borough showing tho location of the tramway tracks for tho electrio traction system, tho position of the poles, sections of the permanent way, etc., together with a description of the works within the borough.—lt was agreed to take this matter in committee after the ordinary meeting. • T. K. Sidey, M.H.R., replying to tho council's letter with regard to tho width of streets, wroto that he had referred the letter to the Minister for Public Works, but tho Minister had already stated that ho would reintroduce legislation which was attempted last session in this connection.—Received.

The Benevolent Trustees acknowledged receipt of tho council's letter with reference to a complaint from G. M. Westwood of a nuisance existing on tho grounds of the Benevolent Institution, and stated in reply that they could find nothing to cause a nuisance. If thero was any nuisance it waS caused by complainant himself.—The Inspector said he had inspected tho grounds of the institution and found nothing to cause a nuiaanco. The only thing that might be called a nuisance was a littlo stagnant water on Mr Wcstwood's property. There was a. hea.p of cabbago leaves and other vegetable matter on tho institution ground, but it was well covered and disinfected. Xhe material was being decomposed for mnnure purposes—Cr R, Wilson stated that ho could assure the council that the rubbish caused no nuisance whatever. It would now be removed further away from tho boundary.—Tho letter was received. t

Tho District Health Officer wrote, with reference to the complaint from James Hunter, that the solution of the difficulty was to replace the present tile pipes with flanged pipes with cement joints.—lt was decided to forward the letter to the Drainage Board.

The Town Clerk, Dunedin, wrote that it was intended to commenco operations in conncction with the tramway construction works in tho borough within the noxt two or three days. As this was a city work it was deemed desirable that the water. required should 1)3 supplied by the City Council, and he therefore asked permission to fix hydrants to tho mains along the tramway routes. The water so used would be carefully checked, and a rebate made for the same.—lt was agreed to grant the permission asked for, and leave arrangements, etc., to tho City Council. . Tho South Dunedin Council wrote informing the council of tho recommendation agreed to by the meeting of delegates from the two councils—viz.: "That the South Dunedin Council co-operate with Caversham Council, in conjunction with tho City Corporation, in tho purchase of land for tlio widening of Cargill road at the junction with the Mam road."— Received. The Mayor mentioned that a further report would be laid before the council at next meeting. . , ; The Municipal Association wrote inviting the council to join it end to bo represented at the next conference. —Referred to the Finance Committee to report. C. and W. Sliiel applied for permission to erect an aerial tramway over Forbury road for tho conveyance of clay to the brick works.— It "ivas agreed that the section of the act relating to tho matter should be complied wifh'
