LONDON MISSIONARY SOCIETY
Tho deputation from the London Missionary Society to tho Otago Auxiliary Branch addressed another well-attended mooting at Moray Place Congregational Church last I evening. Tho Rov. \V. Saundero presided. Dr Ashton, of Kaclnva, India, gave an I extremely interesting address from tho standpoint of Ihc medics) missionary, giving his hearers a pieturo of the mission patients —tho 111011 011 otto side and the women oil tho other, —and telling hoiv, from the nature of their diseases, he took occasion to preach the Gospel, illustrating diseases of the spirit from diseases of tho body, and showing thorn how, as thoy camo to him to euro their bodies as superior to their own ineffectual nativo remedies, so for spiritual euro they must go to a greater Physician. The speaker concluded by earnestly advocating the need for workers in the mission field. Tho Rov. J. King, organising aecretary for Australia, in a • brio! address dealing partly with tho society's financial aspect, alluded to the fact that the effort niado last yoar to increase the society's finances resulted in tho wiping out of an ensmnlatod deficiency of £62,000, and the increasing of tho average incora? by £16,000 in addition. He also stated that tho Australian contributions were larger last year than over before, and that, notwithstanding the drought and pressure in many directions, their income was considerably iii cxcoss or any previous year. Ho also pointed out that, though tho financial position of the society was never hotter than at present, the demand for extension in many fields • was such that there would need to bo a still further increase of income to overtake tho growing work. Dr Ashton and iho Rev. Mr King speak at the Ravcnsbourne Congregational' Church this evening.
