THE KATIPO NEWSPAPER.

A large utunber of the officers of. tho Pod and Telegraph Departments assembled at the Telegraph Office last evening for the purpose of making a'presentation to Mr W. M'Nickle, •who haa for some years filled the offices of editor and secretary of the Katipo aewsipaper, whiqh is about to bo transferred to Wellington. •.Hγ J. G. Ballard, officer in charge at Dunedin, presided, a-ud Sir J. G: Ward made the presentation, which consisted' 'of a silver epergne,. dinner gong, spirit. stand, barometer, aoil massive silver salver, bearing the following inscription:—"Presented by tho Post Rnd Telegraph officers to fc. .M'Nickle, Esq., ia recognition of his work as editor and secretary of the' Eatipo newspaper, from tho year 1593 to 1902." Mr M'Nickle. -was also presented with a. photo shield from the Katdpo.Committee; and, on behalf of Mi F. M. Scully, he also received-a shield with photo's of the. 'New Zealand Post and' Telegraph Board of Appeal. ■ •

In making the presentation, Sir J. G. Ward said it afforded him personally a great 'dealof. pleasure to be associate with those who had made (his presentation. Ho could say from his experience, having closely observed the conduct of the journal, that any praise accorded to Mr M'Niokle was highly.deserved. It waa needless to speak of the difficulties which must necessarily surronnd the position, of editor! of a journal for the purpose of voicing grievances and making representations which must! be in conformity with the views of those who ■ were intimately connected with the journal. It would be agreed' that Mr M'Nickle had. managed-to conduct the journal without .bring--dng himself much , into, conflict.-with his superiors. The Katipo had been of immense service to all grades in the departments. Hβ had repeatedly read the Katipo to find put the opinions of the men in the service, in order to grasp and; deal- with matters which tiffcctedj. tho position of those in the service. Sin. Joseph also spoke of Mr M'Nickle's coriaectidnl with the Appeai Board, and the able way in which he had discharged the responsible duti»9 devolving , upon him. He considered the gifts before him were worthy of the givers, And) Mr M'Nickle was the worthy recioierit of worth's, gifts.—'(Applause.) * ■.

Messrs Walker and O'Conner having eulogised the good work done by Mr M'Nicklo, the latter suitably acknowledged the presentations. At the call- of Mr Ballard, cheers were given for Sir J. G. Ward for his kindness ia attending tewake the presentation.. -Sir J. G. Ward in a few complimentary remarks moved) a vote of thanks to Mr Ballard for presiding. . This was carried, and the proceeding terminated.
