When picked up lifo was instinct. Yesterday afternoon, when the representatives of the Wanganui Fire Brigade .were practising tho ladder and Loso event on the Marino Parade a nasty accident ocouired. Two of the team, named Sims and Halligan, were on tho ladder, one half way up and the other near tho top with the hose, when lho water was turned on. The high pressure caused 1 tho man on top to lose control of the hose, with the result that it performed a numbor of vigorous antics, eventually becoming entangled in the ladder, whioh it precipitated into the middle of the street with those who were on it. Both men. were hurt by tho fall and tho_ ladder striking them, and they were immediately sent to the Hospital, whore it was ascertained the injuries wcro not so serious as at'first anticipated. ■ • * ASHBURTON, March 7. Last night tho three-year-old boh of 'If* John Burgess died from burns received through his flannelette nightdress catching fire. In the absence of his mothor the child got.out of his cot, and ffoiiipr too near the firo tho nightdress ignited. The mother arrived in tiino to put out tho flames, but the' boy was burned so severely that he'died five hours afterwards. - • Henry Bowie, of Port Chalmers,. was riding a bieyelo down Rattray street yesterday about noon, and when crossing Princes, •street his machine skidded on the train rails, and ho was thrown heavily on to the road and stunned. Dr Stephenson, who was passing at tho timo, attended to the man, who shortly afterwards recovered his sonses,- and was able to prococd on his way. ' There is no improvement in th condition, of the Port Chalmers man, John Gregg, who was admitted to tho Hospital last week a 3"tho result of a fall in the graving doot, ;
