ON SABBATH EYE.

A COLUMN OP RELIGIOUS ' READING.

(Conducted by the Rev. F. W. Borehak.) CALVARY. (By Police-constable George H. Mitchell.) ■When to Calvary I did go, • . And gazed upon that sceno of woe, My heart did melt within. I saw my Lord upon tho cross, A sacrifice—my gain, His loss— The Bearer of my sin. The sky was black and overcast When He, my Saviour, breathed His last, ■ And gave tho parting cry: "My God, my God, why hast Thou left . Thy Son, whoso heart in twain is cleft, . Alone, and thus to die? " They took Him down amid the gloom, And laid Him in the spacious tomb, And thore they rolled a stone Against tho mouth; that He might bo TJnablo to come forth and frco Himself, while there alone. But what could keep Him in tho grave, Who died a ruined world to save From death and dire perdition? In three days He triumphant rose Over His calumniating foes, To yield them His fruition. , And meeting Hi 3 disciples then,. He filled with pcace those faithful, men, Ero Ho to heaven departed. • They watched Him as He passed away Into tho light of purest day, And left them broken-hearted. But one day He shall come again, I know not where, I know not when, And for Him I am waiting. 0 may my lamp bright burning be "When He shall come in majesty, My bliss or doom then stating.
