CLOSER SETTLEMENT IN CANTERBURY.
(Per United Press association.) CHRISTOHURCH, March 5,, The Canterbury mombers have drawn up a combined report urging upon the' Government the necessity for their immediately taking euoh steps as will lead to oloser settle* ment of the land of this province. The, report points out that of the land taken up by fresh settlements the increase in area of holdings in Auckland amounted to 507,434acres, in Taranaki to 219,127, in Wellington to 422,489, while Canterbury for fivo years showed an increase in area of only 7416 acres. The report is to lie presented to the' Premier, and an attempt will bo ma'de to get him to inspect land suitable for settlement.
