A MURDER TRIAL.

(Per United Press Association.) NEW PLYMOUTH, March-5. The trial of Walter Smith on a charge of murder was oontinued till 10 o'clock tonight, whon the case for the prosecution closed. 'The judge and jury were willing to proceed, but counsel {or the prisoner \Mr Weston) point blank refused to open his ease after being engaged for 12 hours consecutively. Eventually the jury agreed' to adjourn, and were locked up for the night. The case will be resumed to-morrow morning. A feature of the day's proceedings was the searching cross-examination of one of the witnesses for the Crown, relative to his past career. The revelations were somewhat sensational.
