THE GAELIC SOCIETY.
Tho monthly meeting of tins society was held l&3t night in tlio Oddfellows' Hall, Stuart street. Chieftain Roderick Mackenzie occupied the chair, Pine-major M'Kechnfo having played a inarch and Miss Beove » pianoforte selection, tlio Chairman in a short ad(lres3 oppressed the pleasure it gave him to see such a largo audieiies. Tiic members knew that since last meeting th chief (Mr Dugald M'Pherson) had started on his trip to the Home Country, after receiving an enthusiastic " sendoft'" from tho society. In a fen* months they hoped to seo him back again, bearing with him rcmombrances of tho land they all loved so well. It would ba the duty of the members to uphold the work of the society in his Absence, which no doubt they would do. He had to apoiogiso for the absence of Messrs Donald St'Phcrscn, John M'Millan, and J. Nelson; and to, remind the choir that 011 the last Monday of the monili their practice would U3 resumed. Mr MacLeod (secretary) read, sonu, newspaper extracts regarding Celtic matters,.and commented on one amission which the society would do well to obviate in future— viz., tho eclebrat'on of tho anniversaries and centenaries of their own Gaelic bards. These bards would compare not unfavourably with the poets whose birth-dates were celebrated the world over, a.nd the Gaelic poeis were in that respoct quite licglectsd. It would be tho society s duty to cce that- this reproach should not exist much longer. The concert was much enjoyed, all the singer being encored and cheered vociferously. Mr J. Jngo opened with " WheTe has Scotland found her fame?" and -um ssic '. , tho flo s' c „ r . °' Dunblane"; Lachlon M .Uonald sang Clin nihor nacli coma leain cogudh no sitli," "Am breacan ualach," " Dui'ileng;,m tea," and "An nighean donn a chota (Uiui ; Jlisr Bandeen sang "Yo banks and braes"; Mr R. Mackenzie, inn., "Cuir an ordadh ur canvas"; Mrs Lister. "Coram' tnrough the lye" and "John Eighlandman" • -iliss Campbell, "Oh, for tho bloom of my own native heather" and " Mary of Argylc"; Miss ?r.T- "^ as " c3 in the air"; irr Colin Mivcnzie, "The hat my father wore" and John H'Grath." Miss Winnie M'Kenzie n yms n. violin solo with excellent. fistc and skill for one so young, and received great applause. Pipe-major iflvochnie, as usual, was a bo?t iji himself as regards the notional music. Mr Duncan M'Lean*was e.eeted a member.
