INSPECTION AND INSTRUCTION OF SCHOOL CADETS.

The inspection, and instruction of the city school cadets was commenced by Major Lovcday yesterday morning at' the NorthEaet Valley School. The senior oadet corps of tho school (64 strong) were paraded first, and after being instructed in the position of a soldier were examined in tho turnings, dressing, the parts of the rifle, and tho manual exercise, both on tho halt and in motion. The wholo of .the cadets of the school (numbering 134) were then paraded in column of companies in single rank, and some valuable preliminary instruction in the new drill given, all the youngsters entering thoroughly into the spirit of the thing, and acquitting themselves most creditably. Tho drill in single rank is to be taken up by tho Volunteers shortly, Major Lqveday haying meanwhile ohtoined: permission to set it on foot among tho cadet'. The lads practised forming sections, right, loft, and about, moving off by companies in various formations, changing direction, increasing and 'diminishing , front an advance and forming* line from column of route, the move.me«te being first carried out by word of command and then by .many of ii!o signals oommonly used in extended order drill. At the close of the parade Major Lovcday dslivered a short address on iho duties of the various ranks of a. military unit. Ho observed that the.first duty oi the soldier was obsdience, and illustrated the remark by tho obedience shown by tho officers of the Campordown in the Mediterranean, when-, in pursuance of order?, a movement was executed by that vessel which led to the sinking of the Victoria. The dutios ot noncommissioned officers wero very fully explained, and the Major concluded his address by some practical instruction'in signalling:, the navy o. semaphore signalling and the army or Mors6 signalling being both dealt with. In the afternoon Major Loveday carried out y a, (similar course of uistruttion at the George Street School. Ho proposes taking the remainder of the nohools in the following order:—Union Street and Albany Street Schools, to-day; Kaikorai and Arthur Street Schools, to-morrow; Mornington and High Street Schools, on Thursday; Caversham School and , Cavcrsham Industrial School, on Friday; Green Island and Normal Schools, on Monday, 9th inst.; Lawrence,, on Tuesday; Balclutha, on Wednesday: Eaitangaita, on Thursday; and Milton, 1 on Friday.
