(Per United Press Association.) NEW PLYMOUTH, February 27. Madame Melba arrived yesterday, and was officially received by the Mayor and councillors. To-night the Theatre. Royal was well filled for the concert. The greatest enthusiasm was shown by the- audience. She loft for Auckland after the- concert, the boat being specially delayed. ■WANGANUI, Fobrumy 27. The Collector of Customs visited Feilding the other day to inspect the local brewery and take stock of its contents. Several barrels represented as containing beer were found to be full of water, and a prosecution will result.
HOKITIKA, February 27. At the Magistrate's Oourfc to-day several sawmillers were charged, on the information of the Crown lands ranger, with Dilating sawdust in certain rivers, contrary to the fishery conservation regulations. Defendants were fined £5 Is and costs. Notice of appeal was given. Similar informations against the 6ame defendants were recently dismissed by the magistrate at Greymouth.
CHRISTCHURCH, February 27. The Chief Justice this morning gave judgment in an appeal by a Sumner hotelkeeper from a decision by the stipendiary magistrate, who convicted him of supplying liquor to a traveller who had already had drink at another hotel, and had been 35 minutes in tho locality. His Honor dismissed the appeal, saying that tho question of time did not arise. It was permissible only for a traveller to obtain refreshments on arrival, and in any case not obliiratory on the publican to supply him with liquor. It was clear that this traveller had not arrived lrom a journey, but from another hotel.
Mr H. F. Wigram (tho present Mayor) has consented to staud for the mayoralty of Greater Christchureh.
ABHBURTON, February 27.' A report has beeu received.from a practical ma.n of long experience on the suitability of the fireclay deposit found on the Mount Somers Coal Company's property for making fireclay goods. After thoroughly testing the sample, he reports that it is firstclass fireclay of the best quality; that it burns white, and will make excellent firebricks.
TLMARU, February 27. The Borough Council offices here were entered last night by a person or porsons unknown, and a chequo for £100 and £22 in cash taken.
