BROAD BAY REGATTA.

Though the weather on New Year's Day was extremely unsettled, this did not prevent the Broad Bay regatta 'from being again this year a complete success. There are always a large number of visitors ft this popular harbour resort at thi3 time of the year, and this was swelled on New Year's Day by a considerable number from Dunedin and Port Chalmers. A capital day's sport was provided for tho visitors, and also for all competitors. In some respecte Broad Bay is an ideal spot for holding a regatta, as the course necessarily used is such that the yachts are always within tho range of the spectators' eye; and, again, there is no more sheltered m the harbour. A light" north-easterly wind proved excellent for both sailing and other events. Broad Bay regatta, however, is essentially a yachtsmen's function, and the committee are wise ■ in' confining the programme almost entirely to sailing races. As showing tho popularity of the regatta, the turnout of sailing craft at Broad Bay on New Year's Day was one of the finest ever seen on the harbour,. and scarcely a yacht in the bay but was also a competitor, though the chances of some were meagre in the extreme. Intermittent showers fell during the afternoon, but were not serious enough to effect tho success of things, and the races wero all got off well up to time, and were finished altogether by 1.30 p.m. Mr P. Sutherland's cutter Madge, as usual, was kindly provided as flagship, and a I arrangements were well seen to. The following were the office-bearers for this years regatta --President, Mr A. J. Morrison,-vice-president, Mr B. Necs; treasurer, Mr E. Hazlett; secretary. Mr M. K. M'Oullocn; committec-Mossrß A. Wiseman, A. Low, W. Moneon, 0. Graham, H. Bmnie R. Dow, J. M'Pherson, A. Fullerton, F. Scales, K. M'Culloch and H. Fanoourt; handicappers, Messrs Cameron and Sinclair; starter, Mr P. Sutherland; timekeeper, Mr A. J. Sinclair. On the remaining three rounds Thelma made a steady gain, eventually, winning rather easily. At the first mark. Leader worked into second place, and held that position throughout. Roma held third place for the first round, closely; followed by "Waitiri, and then Carina, the latter not picking up the light airs well. The third round saw, a change in the position of the three rear boats, Carina passing to windward of Roma aiid Waitiri, and the latter boat beating Roma. In tho last round Carina gained considerably on Leader, and Roma, passed Waitiri. Waitiri, though finishing last, was within her timo allowance for second place.
