OTAGO ROWING ASSOCIATION.
The annual meeting of the Otago Rowing Association was hold last evening; present— Messrs L. R. Wilson (chairman), W. J. Wilson (Queen's Drive 8.C.), W. J. Moyes (Port Chalniers R.C.), A. E. Gascoigae, G. Hogan, C. Collins, W. Hall (D.A.B.C), RM'lndoe. W. Wills (North-End 8.C.), L. L. Kirkcaldy, P. J. Priest (0.E.C.), and J. Stables (Oamaru 8.C.). Apologies for absence were received from Messrs J White andF. W. Mitchell. An application for affiliation to the association from tike Oamaru Boating Club was considered, and it' was decided to comply with the request. The Chairman, in moving the adoption of the report and balance sheet (already published), said the association during the past 12 months had not been idle, and vejy satisfactory results had accrued from its work. JKo expressed satisfaction with tho racing and entries at Port Clialmors and at Waihola. The good competition was undoubtedly due to the cups, particularly the John Mill and W. L. Hooper cups; and these trophies had been a great incentive to rowing throughout Otago. The annual fixtures, tho Eight-oar Tournament and the Waihola Regatta, had both been most successful. Representatives had been sent to Invcrcargill, where the racing liad been of a high order, considering the fact that rowing as a. sport was comparatively young there- yd. The representatives had suffered defeat in the contest for the Edmond Cliallcnge Shield, but had the satisfaction of carrying off the Southland Championship. He also. commended the rowing of tho Oamaru Club. Perfect weather had fortunately been experienced for tho regatta at Waihola, and the racing had been of a high standard, the orows finishing well together and many exciting contests being witnessed. The Henley Challenge Cup had not been in' competition, as visiting crews had not been in a position at present to compete, so it had been held for next year. The association had suffered a loss through the removal of Mr Ja.v, the secretary, to Christchurch ; but Mr Hooper had ably taken up ihe duties. He spoke in liigh terms of favour of the taade tournaments, which had been much appreciated by the public. The men engaged in. the tournaments had readily seen the excellence of rowing as a sport, and many had joined the clubs. Ho trusted the incoming committee would see its way to hold another like institution. The assets were not in a very flourishing condition, but valuable assets were, of course, held in the plate. The credit balance was £2 17e. In conclusion, he tliankod the various delegates for their support to the association and himself, the press for courtesy extended, the Railway Department and Mr Grant (railway traffic manager), the Union Steam Ship Company, and fche_ Dunedin Cycling Club, to all of whom the association was indebted for kindness, . assistance, aiid courtesy.
