SEQUEL TO A BREACH OF PROMISE.
(Pek United Press association.) ' WELLINGTON, September. 30. In the Supremo Court recently Mary Richards obtained a judgment against one Herbert Birch, a, draper's salesman, for breach' of promise of marriage. Birch subsequently filed a schedule m bankruptcy, his assets being set down at nil and his liabilities at £134,, the amount ot judgment and costs arising out of the breach of promise case. The defendant came »<p for examination to-day before the Official Assignee. He 'stated thai, his wages were £4 weekly, out of which he paid 25s a week for board arid 7s for meals in town. He estimated that it cost him £75 per annum for drees., He was unable to make any offer. In. March last he had £200, but had since given hi 9 sister 63 guineas to buy a piano,,, and. had presented his father with £40. ' He had paid £69 in legal expenses, and the remainder of the money had gone in incidentals. The assignee adjourned the examination sine die, remarking that the debtor would have to go before the court for his discharge within four months.
