ASSAULT ON A HOTEL MANAGER.
o A seriotis assault is alleged to have taken ■ place at the Leviathan. Hotel about 7 o'clock last evening. It is stated that Mr James Connor, the manager of the Leviathan Hotel Company, who resides at tho hotel, had occasion to visit the culinary depart' inept, and there saw one of the assistant ' cooks, named Charles Crawford, in tlie i;pantry. He told Crawford that according. J to the rule of the house he '(Crawford) was i not allowed in the pantry, and ordered him i to return to his kitchen. This Crawford j refused to do, but subsequently obeyed. About half an hour afterwards Mr Connor .was passing tho meat house, when he saw . the two assistant cooks —Crawford and Charles Cunningham—inside with a bottle of beer. Mr Connor at once ordered them ■ out, asking them what this breach of discipline meant, as it was a. firm rule that no ; employes of the hotel should have liquor in his possession. Both the men, it is alleged, then assaulted Mr Connor,- striking him about tho head and face with their fists. Mr Connor managed to struggle away and call, for help, but states that he was pulled down and repeatedly kicked. Upon his again calling for assistance, the other cooks heard his voioe, and rushed in, pulling the two assailants away. The police were .communicated with, and the two men arrested by Detective Connelly. They will bo charged at the City Police Court this morning, probably with assault, causing actual bodily harm, which is an indictable offence. Mr Comior seems to have suffered severely, as his face, when he was released from his assailants, was cut and bleeding in several places.
