CAVERSHAM BOROUGH COUNCIL.

At the meeting of the Caversham Borough Council hold last evening there were present— The Mayor (Mr J. Wilson), Crs Burgess, R. Wilson, Rutherford, Cole, Piidtly, H'Pherson, Rnston; Searle, and Stevenson. The Works Committee reported having instructed the inspector to surface the l'oad leading to the Second Beach at St. Ciair, and spread 20 loads of rotten rock opposite Mr Penwick's property, and to report to the next meeting of the Works Committee on the slip on Great Queen street. The committee had granted Mr Bates a building permit for a vinery,—Adopted. The Finance. Committee reported that the sum of £194 3s lid had been lodged in the 'bank since the last meeting, and recommended that £290 0s 2d general, accounts, £18 9s lid water supply accounts, £18 ISs 3d sanitary accounts, and £28 5s 6d drainage accounts be passed foi- payment. Hie committee would report at next meeting of the council on Dr Ogston's letter.— Adoptnd. The Drainage, Water, and Sanitary Committee' reported having instructed the inspector to open up the drain in College street to find out where it is leaking. Respecting charges for water for building purposes, the comnn'ttoe had left the matter in the hands of the town clerk to act. An extraordinary supply of water to Ihe Drainage Board buildings had been granted on' the usual terms. Consideration had been given to the charge made for water to Mr White's property, and he had been informed that the charge would remain as at present, but when there are more services in that locality the committee would again consider the question. It had been deciued to obtain the horSe feed for the borough from the local tradesmen, giving each a turn monthly. The prainage Board had asked to provide drainage for two new houses ou St. Kilda road; a'.so for a reply to the council's request of the 20th June re drainage for houses in Bridgmau steeet and Kensington avenue. The* inspector had been instructed to examine the main drain, and the water inspector had been authorised to procure the necessary water plant.—Adopted, with the exception of the clause referring to ■the purchase of horse, feed, which was withdrawn fiom the report.

A number of settlers of the Green Island Bush district waited upon the council to petition for the clearing up of a slip at the junction of Groat Queen street.—Mr M'Laren, who headed the petitioners, informed the council that they wanted to know what the council were going to do in the matter. They were tired of waiting upon the council, and insisted upon having some understanding arrived ai; failing which they would have to go further. They wanted to know it' (he council had a right to close a. road and keep it closed without making any repairs?—Cr Cole: Perhaps my friend is. not aware that the council has the power to close the road altogether.—Another oC the petitioners alleged tlir.t ho was spending from £1 to i'l ]0s a week owing to the stale of the road, ar.d ho wanted to , know -who was going to pay him his expenses. They could-not get up'the hill at all in bad wez.ther.—The Mayor informed tho deputation that the council had instructed tlie inspector to inspect the road and. reoort to tlie Works Committee, to whom tlie matter had previously been referred.—Tho deputation withdrew, thanking tlie council for receiving thcia, and hoping they would not have to wait on them again in the matter. The Inspector reported that since starting work-he had built three mud tanks on the Main South road and one in Rnnkeiior street, built Hie. wall in Sydney street, repaired mud tank in Laiicefield street, and repaired droin in College street. The drain in Bench, street was ■finished, and also the box drain on Forlmry Toad. He had examined the drain on the Muiii South road, and found it clean. He drew attention to Park sireet. which required a fe.loads of metal for repairs; and recommended that Railway street receive a oc<at flf metal from Sydney street to Gcodall street.— Adopted. The Town Clerk of South Dunedin forwarded a letter from the Caledonian Society offering •to pay half cost of purvey to determine tlits proper boundary of the land in dispute, and that, in the event of the council in the meantime removing the fence, it would be at, their own risk.—Resolved—" That the council adhere to their former decision in tho matter, and that r.otico be given the society that if thn fence is not removed by the society wilhiu 14 days tho council would do sj."
