Tim home team had (he best of the'game, but the visitors scored just on the elqse of time. NORTH v. SOUTH MATCH. (Per United Puess Association.) "WELLINGTON, September 4. A meeting of the Management, Committed of the New Zealand Rugby TJniou last night decided.that inasmuch as sonie-of the provincial unions refused to pay the expenses of their respective representatives in the North v. Synth Island match the New Zealand Union would defray- the expenses of transit, etc., out of the gate proceeds of the match. .Arrangements for suitably entertaining the teams, also for a public reception, have been made. The northern representatives arrived last night, and wc-ve driven to the Criterion Hotel, where they wore formally welcomed -by the officials of" the-O.F.A. The team as originally selected has been slightly altered. They are confident of giving a good account of themselves-, and consequently Otago have a hard task set them to win. The Mornington Band have offered their servicss, and will march from the Criterion Hotel to the ground. The following critique on the players by " Soekerisfc" should prove of interest: —, Otago. Murray (goal-keepr-rj—First representative match; uses fine judgment and clears well, especially when in a tight corner; kicks \voll, but rather inclined to keep tho bail in possession too long; has played creditably in club matches. Dobson (left back) —Representative of some years' standing; perhaps the finest player in his position in Now Zealand; plays with wonderful judgment, and a particularly hard man to pass; undoubtedly./ Otago's strongest defence; fine command over the ball. Ashtou (right back) —Represented the province in 1894, 1896, 1538, 1901; a reliable player; kicks well, but rather yjeak with left foot; good tackier, and makes a wonderful recovery. Middlemass (left half)-r-liepresented in 1900 and 1901; understands the game thoroughly; works like a Trojan, and a big order for the opposing wing to cope with: a splendid player. P. M'Millan (centre half) —Representative of 1892, 1693. 1891, 1896, 1900. 1901; one of tho finest half backs seen in Dunedin; gives the forwards plenty to do, and places the bill! with splendid judgment; a dangerous man near goal, and host a very taking style. Kilgour (right half)—U'irst inte'rprovincial cap: Hip smallest member of (he team: a Holid worker; cuts up tho opposing combination in fine stylo: a fine daphy player, and will prove a veritable thorn to Wellington's left wing. Brown (left wing forward) —Represented in 1893, 1900, 1901; the fastest man in the team, and particularly hard to check; pretty foot-worker; lias proved Hie most; prolific scorer during tho past season; revels ii! his work when ho has plenty to do: will prove a source of trouble, to the invincible Renai. Robertson (inside left)— First representative cap: a fine, sturdy stamp of player, «nd earned his place by ■sheer hard work; lacks devil, but should w;:rk in harmony with his winjr partner. G. JYl'Millan (centre)— The oldest representative in (he team, having represented Ota go _ since 1890: ono of the fine-it exponents, of the game in the colony: knows over point, and has proved a firstclass general of past teams; brilliant, very fast, and tho most reliable shot in tho team; an unselfish player, and his wings p'nce every confidence in him, and can (lopenil f>n getting plenty to do from-his sphere of piny. Ferguson (inner right)— First representative match ; a gnod shot, and a playor with plenty of dash : is inclined to give hi' outside pnrlner lif.tlo room to work in,; should lujh (hi; ball in quick f.imt! on the attack. Irvine (outside right)— First cap; 'when in the humour is one of the most dashing forwards in Dunedin; centres well, and is also a good shot; plays well on the attack, and will give opposing half backs a busy time. Renai (left back)— First representative cap; strong on tlie defence ami a good kick; should back up his partner more; was sclcctod as nmergenev. K. L. backs in New Zealand; a very heady ; player, neat, and places the ball with perfection ; plays hard on the attack, and •, particularly strong on defence; has a pretty style;. i Nagle (centre half)— Represented Otago in • 1898 and last year; captain of the team; i a most brilliant and consistent psrformer, i and indulges in plent yof work; very rough on opposing forwards, never allowing a ■ chance. [ '•■ I Taylor (left half)— Usually plays in the I centre: is prominent both on the attack and defence, aaid shines brilliantly all [ through; a good, all-round player; last i represented in 1898. Wells (outside right)— This position could i not be bettered. He plays a dashing game • all through, and is mainly responsible for • combined forward mshes; represented his . province last year. Smellio (inside right)— Represented last ■ year; resorts to more cohesion than brili h'oncy; plays well in partnership with Wells; an erratic shooter. Brodie (centre)— Has a fine club performi anco; not too good a shot, but, neverthe--1 less, a fino player. :He had slight opposition in the trials; first representative match. Morrison (inside left)—A brilliant performer ; a dangerous man near goal,; ! centres in fine style; usually plays on the i wing. At Wakari Park on Wednesday the Normal SeliQol Association team, who were leading by 2 points in the competition for the cup, wore defeated by the Kaikorai School team by two goata to one. Throughout the gamo was interesting, and was wotched by a large number of interested spectators. Irvine (back), Marshall and Irvine (forwards) played a sterling game for the Normal, while Robertson, Jamieson, J. ■ Scott, and Millol , fu'ly sustained the credit of the hill team. Mr W. Young controlled the game in an impartial manner.
