It lias frequently been asserted that the past winter in Auckland lias boon one of the worst known for years, but leaving out of consideration May, which is not generally regarded as a winter month, heavy rain has boen ail exception. This fact is demonstrated by the figures supplied from the oltioial observatory. During Juno, July, and August the total rainfall recorded was only 7.69 in, or only a little move than half the total for tlie three corresponding irioiiths last year, which was lS.llin. The past winter has been the driest for many years. The Onel'.unga Borough Coureil liafe resolved, on the motioii of the Mayor, that the question of fire iiisurancfi as relating to tho borough 1)8 referred to the council in committee to ascertain what can be done in the direction of establishing a local insurance association. NAPIER, September 2. The Government steamer Tutanekai arrived about midday, ;md landed the Ministerial party, who have been at Gisborne. They afterwards left by train, and will rcaoh Masterton to-night. NEW PLYMOUTH, September 2. Tho theft of about £100 contained in a registered letter in transit between Ifawera and Inglewood has been reported to the police. CHRISTCHURCH, September 2. An unusual case was before the Stipendiary Magistrate's . Court yesterday, when a fisherman named Lawrence Joyce claimed £10 for recovering the body of tho young man Stubberfield, who was drowned on January 32 whilst bathing in the Sumner Estuary. It was alleged that the father of deceased had .offered £10 reward, and only paid Joyce £1. The Bench gave judgment for defendant. GREYMOUTH, September 2, Yesterdav 20 additional men wore put on the Coal Crook railway, connecting with the State coal mine, and 20 more wilt be put on next Monday, making in all about 70 workmen. Notwithstanding this, owing to the large influx of workmen lately, there is oresit dearth of employment in tho district, there being 150 names down at the Labour Bureau.
