FALLEN SOLDIERS' MEMORIALS

THE DUNEDIN SCHEME. Now that the Coronation celebrations are ctfer and most of " our boys " have returned from South Africa, th(j Fallen Soldiers' Memorial Committee aro taking energetic steps to bring the project they have in hand to a successful issue The object is to provide a central memorial to those who gave up thei- lives fighting for the Empire in fcouth Afnoa. To do this the co-operation of-the whole provincial district is invited, and the committee are doing this in the first instance by issuing 500 circulars containing •■he report of the sub-cottimitteo, which we published on July 15, and was subsequently adopted by the main committee. The governing principle is " Small subscriptions, but everyone to give something." Thfc provincial population ia 140,000, and the committee have fixed the minimum, subscription at the modest sum of one penny. It is to be hoped that those who receive circulars will take steps to bring it under the notice of their neighbours, and that all will assist in making the contributions thoroughly representative. THE VETERANS' HOME. . (FROlt ObH Owtt CoftBESPONDENT.) WELLINGTON, September 1: A mealing of the Veterans' Home General Committeo Was hold in Government House this afternoon, when Lieutenant-colonel Collins was unanimously elected as a representative of Wellington on tht> Central Committeo. It was announced that subscriptions amounting to £1879 ha'd been received in Wellington, ami it was decided to make a continuous effort with a ■ view to raising this amount to £3000. Lord Ranfurly briefly addressed the meeting, staling that the general response from the colony hud not been us satisfactory as anticipated* Hβ could seo £6000 or £7000 in sight, but unless some of the districts which had up to the present done nothing came forward and helped, the total amount would not bo sufficient to make the memorial a real credit to the colony. He suggested that if some of the large mnholders were to take the matter up a considerable sum might be> added to the fund. In three instances where this had boen tlone the result had proved very satisfactory. It was particularly encouraging to him to find {hat such large numbers, of veterans had themeelveg sent iu subscriptions. It wna resolveu to hold a garden fete in about two months' time, to assist the fifntl, and a committee of ladies was appointed to deal with the matter oi entertainments generally.
