UNIVERSITY COUNCIL.

The regular monthly meeting of tho University Council was held yesterday afternoon, there being present Meem E. B. Cargill (vice-chancellor), D. Stewart, D. R. White, Drs Shand and Burns, and the Rev. A, Cameron. Leave of absence was granted to the Chancellor (Mr Justice Williams) and to Mr G. G. Russell. The finance Committee reported that there was a credit balanoe of £587 5s 4d in the bank. They had: authorised ah expenditure of £3 on one of the Leith street houses. In the matter of tho First Hill leases, the Registrar had reported that proceedings were being taken against defaulters in accordance with the resolution of the board. Tho. committee, after consideration, recommended the council to accept surrender on the part of the,lessees, on payment of costs. They reported having received from Mr George. Bell a cheque for £800 7e, for which the Registrar had forwarded w receipt, with the thanks of the council.—The report was adopted. The House Committee reported that Mrs Harris would continue to act as caretaker, and that it would* be necessary to employ occasional assistance for scrubbing. They recommended that the arrangements be left m the hands of tho Registrar. As the janitor had been unable to look after the grounds for some months, the'committee re commended that the Registrar should be authorised to employ outside labour for the next six months, and that the janitor be not expected to do the work during that period. The cc-mmittoe were not able at their meeting to deal with tho question, of the letter from the students ae to the matter of the use of tho library.—Adopted." Tho Professorial Board recommended that a fee of £2 2s be paid by candidates for tho preliminary examination of tho Mining School, and that in regard to the coming sessional examination Mr A. R. Barclay be asked to act as examines in Conetitutional History and Mr W. Riddell in Jurisprudenoe.—Approved. The Registrar reported , that the Chancellor had nominated the Rev. A. Cameron, Mr D. R. White, and Professor Sale to represent the council on the Permanent Committee appointed at the meeting of citizens in the Victoria Hall. The Permanent Committee had appointed Mr John Roberts, C.M.G., chairman, and seleoted a secretary at £50 per annum, and would meet on tho Bth insfc. to confer with sub-committees reprosonting the different sections of the community. _ The Registrar also reported having received u subscription of £5 ss, which he intended to hand over to the. treasurer-of tho Permanent Committee. The Trustees, Executors, and Agency Company was to be asked to act as treasurer and trustee for the committee., The thanks of the council were duo to the City Corporation for tho tige of the Council Chambers for meetings, and to the gentlemen who had acted on sub-com-mittees. Mr Hamilton alto reported having received a cheque for £800 7s from Mr George Bell, being the amount collected for the University, by the Evening Star NewsPaper Company. Hβ had acknowledged Mr Bell s cheque, with the thanks of the council.—Adopted. Tho Registry brought up the question of the retaining wall in the Le-ith, which ie to bo built by the City Council. It was suggested that tho University Council should combine .with tho corporation and build a email portion between tho wooden breastwork and tho St. Ttovid street bridge.—The Registrar and Mr Wliito were authorised to acfc in the matter on behalf of the council. ■ The Registrar applied for leave to attend i -I! , ", 1106, celebrations in connection with the Sydney University.
