JEAN GERARDY.

The announcement made in our amusement column this morning that the famous 'cellist Jean Gerady will' appear here ,on Tuesday, ■Wednesday, and Thursday, 9th, 10th, and 11th September, at tho Agricultural Hall will be hailed with satisfaction, because his really excellent, performances on his famous Stradivarfus 'cello when he was in Dunediu a little more than a year ago, created genuine enthusiasm. Ho is said to be, if possible, in better form than ever, so that a musical treat of rarest excellence may be confidently looked for. It is announced by the management that Miss Electa Gifford, an American soprano, who was prima donna at tie Royal Grand Opera, Amsterdam, a year ago, where she met with exceptional succe3s, will assist. Mr Gottfried Galston, a pianist from London, will also appear. Mr John H. Tait, who is managing the tour for Mr A. H. Canby, tho director, informs us that _ Gerardy opened his New Zealand season at' Auckland 10 days ago, and the three concerts were of a most successful nature, and the advance booking all along, including Wellington and Chriatchurch, is exceptionally' heavy. Gcrardy's powers are already so well known here that tho mere mention of his name recalls his great goniua. Tho Melbourne Argus of JuJv 11 said: "He is one of the most famous artists in the world, and ho is absolutely and beyond contradiction the greatest living violoncellist; his tone is unsurpassable," This' will 1)0 Gcrardy's last lour to Australia and New Zealand, at anyrats for some years to come, because ho has important engagements in Europe and America which will keep his time fully occupied for four or five years to come. The ■box plan will be opened at the Dresden on Thursday ntxt at 10 a.m., and there should be a very heavy booking judging by the enthusiasm being displayed up north.
