Friday, August 29. (Before Mr C. C. Graham, S.M.)

Drunkenness.—Thomas ' Jerome, against whom were G2 previous convictions, two within six months, was convicted and discharged for this offence, after making a most eloquent appeal for lenient treatment.

Theft of a Pair of Eoots.—Daniel Smith pleaded " Not guilty " ,tq stealing, on August 26, one pair of boots, valued at lis 6d, the property of Robert Collier.—Tho Sub-inspector detailed the facts to ba that about midday on the above date a young man working in Mr Collier's window saw the accused lift up a pair of boots and walk off with them. He gave chaso and overtook him near the Normal School and took the hoots from him. Accused then made off, and got away. He was described to the police cs having his faco badly marked, and on Thursday was pointed out to Constable Bunting by a boy whp had seen tho occurrence, and was taken into custody. Ho denied being tho man wanted.—Evidence was given by William George Angel!, Robert Hart, and Robert Collier,—The accused said he had been drinking heavily, and knew nothing about the occurence. He was' a bricknycr s labourer, with a wife and familv. and had work to go to.-His Worship imposed a hue of 40s, with costs (9s), ot, in default, 14 days imprisonment, the offender taking out against himself a prohibition order to applv m the licensing districts of Dunedin ajid Cuversham..
