BENEFIT CONCERT
The Garrison Hall was '• not by any means filled last evening, when a complimentary benefit concert.was given to Mr K VV.rDunne prior to his departure for Australia. A very excellent programme had been arranged, and all the 19 items thereon were presented but one, the concert, in itself of a lengthy nature, being prolonged rather much by the additional items that wero demanded in several cases. Specialty worthy, perhaps, to be singled out among the numerous contributions were Miss Blaney's l'eudering of "At my window" (Parker), which.sffe had to further supplement; Miss Robertson's singing of Tosti's "Yorrei" (thougu this was apparently rather over the heads of the audience); and Miss May Donaldson's violin solo, Musin's " Caprice de concert," which'earned her a deserved recall. Mr T. J. Hjisscy was recalled for her singing of ".The deathless army,' 1 and responded with ( and Mr James J ago earned a similar compliment for " The champion of tho King" (St. Quentin),'to which he replied with '•When bright glancc." The remaining vocal solos were:—"Sing, sweet bird," very well sung by Mrs Jnines Todd; "My queen" (Blunicntbiil), by Mr P, Carolin, "Mv sweetheart when a-boy" (Hatton), by Mr E.Eagar; "Till death" (Maseheroni), by Mr It. L. Foster, jun. (with violin obligato by Mr A. E. Foster); "The dream'angel" (St. Quentin), by Mr Ben Stevens; and the humorous song " Hooray for temperance,' by Mr T. Anthony, Two part songs were also given—the first, " The old brigade," by Messrs Stevens, Foster, llussoy, and Couch; and the second, " ICilhirney," by Messrs Eagar, Robertshaw, Jago, and Jl'Kenna. Neither of these proved exactly inspiring. Mr, F. Birkett's recitation, " The Vagabond "• (in' character), so pleased his hearers that'he was twice recalled, giving a parody on "Bobs" and another trifle. Mr T. G. Aimers also gave a recitation, " Retrospection" (Lyall). The cornet solo "Edelweiss" (Hoch), by Mr R. Phillips, was very enjovable. Mf Stokes's Banjo, Mandolin, and Guitar Band opened each part of tho proceedings with a selection, these being Popular melodies" and the '• Gloria waltz" (Folkestone). A very enjoyable but rather lengthy concert, was apparently the genera! verdict, tho leaving of a number of the audience before the end rather disturbing th. later items. Mr A. J. Barth acted as musical director, and shared tho accompaniments with Mr. A. Yallis and Mr F J. Walsh.
