THE FEDERAL TARIFF.

THE SENATE'S AMENDMENTS,

Pisss Association—By Telegraph—Copyright

, MELBOURNE, August G. (Received, August 7, at o.lo' a.m.) Dig Federal House in committee commenced consideration of tlio Senate's suggestions in the Tariff. Bill. On the rirsfc item, the duty on beer, Sir Kingston asked the Hoiise to disagree with the Senate's suggested reduction. Failing to obtain permission, a general discussion followed.

Sir W. M'Millan moved that the Chairman leave the chair. ' He said the Go-' vernment had accepted about 50 suggestions, but only about seven affected the principles of the bill. They asketf the House to agree to a number pf small, worthless concessions. If there was to bo a compromise it ought to be substantial. If the Government proposals wero not- radically altered they were inviting a struggle which no man could see the end of.

After a general discussion, Mr Kingston replied that the Senate's suggestions were entitled 'to respectful consideration. Where the Government believed they would improve the bill it would accept them. He asked the House, to deal with the suggestions 011 their merits and accept or reject them on their merits only. Consideration of the first item was tlieu resumed.
