OUR RETURNING TROOPERS.

TO BE EN'TERTATNIfD AT A GARDEN PARTY IN 'W-iE, TRIANGLE.

A 'meeting, convened by the Mayor,! to make arrangements for oxiending a fitting welcome to the troops returning in the Orient was held last night in the Town Hall, and was largely attended. ; The Mayor (Mr Park) presided, and among those present wero Ors Tapper and M'Dona'.d, the Town Clerk (Mr Fairbairn), Meisis R. Glendiniug, 11 Chisholm, T. W. Kempthorne, G. L. Denniston, F. G. Cray, R. R. Taylor, E. C. Reynolds, Dr Burt, W. Mills, G. M. Burlir.ton, J. Robin, R. M. Clark, G. C. Israel, A. Palmer, J. Chetwin, and' F. Stilling. There was also an unusually large number of ladies present from both the city and suburbs. Apologies were received from Crs T. K. Christie, and T. Scott, and Messrs P. R. Sargood, E. R. Smith, J, Hutchison, J. F .M. Eraser, J. Moloney, and W. A. W. Wathon.

The Mayor explained that it was proposed to ontcrtain the returned' troopers at afternoon tea in the Triangle on their arrival. It would, perhaps, 1 be thought an unusual thing to have afternoon tea in the open air itij winter time, but he had known garden parties to bo held in ' winter.—(Laughter.) The principal business that evening would be to set up sub-committees. There was an r.loment of Uncertainty as to tho arrival of the steamer, and it might be either Monday or Tuesday. There might also bo a reception at Port Chalmers, and in that rase the Dunodin reception would have to come afterwards. Mr G. L. Denni§ton moved—" That the officers and men belonging to the several contingents returning from South Africa be welcomed on arrival by way of a garden party, to lit! held in the Triangle, and that committees 1)0 sot ur> to carry out the arrangements, and that Colonel Robin, C.8., bo asked if lie can see his way to marching them on arrival to the Triangle for the purpose." Mr T. W. Kempthorne seconded the motion, which was carried unanimously.

The following eommittcw were then set up to carry out the recent-ion: — Finance Committee.—Messrs R. .Chisholm, R. Glendining, T. W. Kempthorne, W. Wills, 11. M. Clark, W. D. Houston, and F. Stilling (chairman).

Ladies' Executive Committee — The Mayoress (Mrs Park), Mesdames G. L. Denniston, E. C. Reynolds, F. Stronach, Macdonald, R: Chisliblm, ,W. Goiv, Kohlenberg,, 0! C. Israel, F. Harrison Jones, P. The following General Committee was then set up. consisting of all the ladies present:—Mesdames J. V/. Smith, J. Jago, W. Gow. P. Williams, W. D, Houston, 13. R. Smith, .T. A. Burt, Eaton, and West, Misses Easther. M. Clark,Clark, M. Black, T'l Black, Williams. (2), C. Simmons, Murray, Nieolson, Robin, Reynolds, .T. Jones, Rayne, Given, Burt, Saunders, Patrick. Lacey. Park, Larson. Hepburn, Arthur (?, Chisholm, West ('?.), Johnson (5), iTornell.

A vote of thanks to the Mayor brought the formal part nf I lie meeting to a c'ostt. The Sealing Committee will be glad of Hip loan of seats, trestles, tables, and marquees, and intending' donors will oblige by communicating with Mr G. M. Burlinson. MEETIXG AT POUT CHALMERS. A meeting for the purpose of taking steps to, welcome the* returning troopers 011 their arrival about tho Mb nf August from South Africa was hold in the Council Chambers, l'ovt Chalmers, yesterday evening. His Worship the Mayor occupied the chair, and amongst tlwe present were Messrs Shaw, M'Gregor, Warren, De Mans, Duke, J. Mill. B:\neliop, and Lieutenant - commander Water?. Mr Leek, the secretary, read correspondence from the Mayor of Dunedin and the Acting-Premier in reference to welcoming the returning troopers. The Mayor (Mr Thomson) stated that ha had an interview with the Mayor of Dunedin that afternoon, and that gentleman could give him no definite information. Mr Do Maus suggested that a hearty weleomo should bo given to the "boys" on their return. Mr Mill concurred with this, and it was resolved to give- effect to the suggestion. It was further rosolved to hold another meeting 011 Saturday night to make final arrangements.
