It is fitted with Grubbs's apparatus for steering .under water, which is an improvement on the French periscope. It. is navigated when on the surface like a torpedo boat, but is less visible, end ■ is able to form up in line of battlo instead of being employed purely in coast service, aud can assume tho defensive. It is expected to prove tlie finest boat of its class afloat. THE TYPE OF BOILER. (Received July 11, at 9.5 a.m.) The Admiralty Committeo appointed to inquire* into the question of naval boilers have reported altogether ad- ■ versely to the Belleville and favourably to the Babcock-Willcox tyne, but as yet are unable to recommend a standard boiler. They consider that the watertube boiler is less economical than the cylindrical boiler, and until a satisfactory type of water-tube boiler is forthcoming ' they recommend for large cruisers.and battleships the cylindrical. Sufficient power to work the auxiliary machinery • and to maintain ordinary cruising speed ought to bo 2001b to the square inch both for water-tube aud cylindrical. This would economise coal and increase the radius of action.
