THE DEATH OF BISHOP COWIE.
the Funeral. (Pek Unitjd Press Association.) AUCKLAND, June 28. Tho funeral o( Dr Cowie, Bishop of Auckland and Primate, took place to-day, and was, perhaps, tho largest and most impressivo ever scon in Auckland- There was a large turn-out of volunteers, and nearly all the public bodies and institutions, such as Houso of Representatives, City Council, Borough Councils, University College, Synod, etc., were represented. Clergy of all denominations wero also present. Innumerable wreaths were sent. The eofl'm was borne on a gun carriage from Bishopscourt to St. Mary's Cathedral, which was crowded. Here the first portion of the burial oflice was sung by a strong choir in surplices, and over 30 clergy weit* present in their
robes. Canon MaeMurray met the coffin at the church gates, and road (lie opening services; Canon Nckon reading the lesson. The procession then went to St. Stephen's Cemetery, all on foot, it being stated thai
the late Bishop preferred there should bo no vehicles. The procession wa* a very long one, and great crowds lined tho streets. At tho fii'avo tho Rev. A. G. Pureha? said tlw committal prayers, awl Archdeacon Calder, the lata Bishop's commissary, read the concluding part of the service. Then followed the hymn, " Now the labourer's task is* o'er," pfter which a firing parly fired three vollcvs.
The Bishop's family have received messages of sympathy from England, Australia, and all parts of the colony, including a cable from Mr Seddon.
June 29. Feeling references to the death of Bishop Cowie were made in nil Iho Anglican and ninny of the other churches to day. Messages of sympathy have been received from all New Zealand Bishops and from many representatives of other denominations, including tho Roman Catholics.
