J Mr William Scott Wilson, sen., partner , in the firm of Wilson and Horton, pro- i prietors of the New Zealand Herald and Weekly News, died this morning. He had b«m in poor health for some time past, but 1 only laid up last weelt. ILYWKRA, Juno 28. Mr M'Guiro addressed his constituents at Hawcra last evening. 110 strongly criticised departmental extravagance, and announced that ho would 6taud for rc-clect'ioii for the district, which, after tho redistribution of seals, contained tho greater portion of tho present constituents. He stated that he was an Independent, and would votoonly for such measures as ho considered best for tho country, no matter by whom introduced. A vote of thanks was accorded. After the address tho Mayor moved a resolution of sympathy with the illness of the King, which was seconded by Mr M'Utiire and carried, the audience standing and singing the National Anthem. WANtiAXUI, June 23. Judge Kettle gave judgment this morning ill it case brought liy tho local inspector of the Society for tho I'nvention of Cruelty to Animals against a horse dealer at Feilding for carrying 12 young and unbroken horses in a railway truck from Hawera to Feilding, the journey occupying 15 hours, without giving them food or water. In view of tho expert evidence called for the defence that no unnecMKiry cruelty was inflicted the ease was dismissed. INVERCARP.iI/li, Juno 28. ' An inquest was held at Dipton on tho body of an infant found buried in a garden. The evidence showed tlmt the child was stillborn, and that the parents of the mother, a single girl, wero not aware that they were breaking the law. A verdict was returned that there was not the slichtesl suspicion of any unlawful means hiring be-cn reeovtod to.
