Oeorge Read had only been known to (he swimming world for four months when he won Hit mile championship of New South Wales on April 13, and at the same time put up a new world's record of 24min 46 4-ssec. lie wai born (says an exchange) in August, 18S2, and is not yet 19 years of ag- 1 . He made his firsi appearance on December 15 in the quarter-mile championship of New South Wales, but had to retiiv owing to an attack of crainp. lie competed at the Australasian championships in A'ictoria during the iirst week in February, and swam second to It. C'tivill in the 440 yds, fSOyds, and one mile. In the 300 yds New South Wales championship he only got third place, being beaten by Cavil] and Craig. lie swam a good second to It. CavilJ in the 500 yds championship of New South Wales, his time being 6niin 40; cc. Owing to an error of measurement the course was only 4S6yds. This distance cxacllv coincides with tlio first 11 laps in the mile championship, which Uead covered in 6min 26 3-ssec. It seems curious that, in the longest distance, lie should beat his own record for the shorter by 3 2-ssec. Hi* times all through the mile were good, and the world's records wcro broken for several of the intermediate distances. At 440vds his time was sniin 51scc. This beats K.
