MEETINGS OF SOCIETIES.

Tho Alliance Lodge of Good Templars held then weekly meeting on Wednesday evening in the Friendly Societies' Hall, South Dunedin, Bro. W. lies, C.T., presiding. There was a large attendanco of members and visitors from sister lodges. Bro. lies was elected chairman, and* Bro. S. Stubb& secretary to tho Carnival Committee. Arrangements wero completed for a series of temperance services, to be held on bunday evenings. Correspondence was received from the Grand Lodge, the District Deputy, and Vine and Vine, Wanganui. Tho photograph of the lodge officers was reported to have been excellently published in the Witness. The election of officers for the ensuing term resulted as follow:—C.T., Bro. JR. Wilson; V.T., Sis. Thom; secretary, Bro. E Bush; F.S., Bro. Southam; treasurer, Sis. M'Phcrson; M., Bio. Holmes; chaplain, Sis. Kit to; Guard, Bro, Ingram; S., 8103. H. Stubbs; S.J.T., Sis. Rainham, jun.; pianist, Sis. Wentworth; P.C.T., Bro. lies. Bros. Mortimer, Wilson, Holmes, lies, and Newall were elected as delegates to the District Ledge. Keen competition resulted for tho various offices. It was resolved to invite the Hope of Caversham Lodge to visit the Juvenile Temple. Votes of thanks were accorded to tho scrutineers and visitors. Bro. D. Cameron (Pioneer), Bro. Cormack (Hope of Duncdin), Bro. M'Caughan (Evergreen), Bro. Clarkson (Hope of Caversham), Bro. ifackie (Pioneer), and Bro. Todd (Hope of Dunedin) responded.

The executive meeting of the Dunedin District Lodge of 0 cod Templars was held on Saturday evening in the Choral Hall, Bro. L. Macfarlane, district deputy, presiding. It was resolved that the lodge go into mourning for three months, and also place on record their admiration for the life and character and their regret at the death of our beloved Queen Victoria the Good. It was decided to hold a meeting to confer degrees on the night previous to the annual meeting, and that the roll of delegates will be called at 7.30, and to arrange a Grand Lodge meeting to confer that degree in March. A motion was also carried to invite the Grand Lodge to hold the 1903 session in Dunedin. Tho D.S.I.T. reported that he would open the Kaikorai Juvenile Temple shortly. Bro. Sandilands was appointed district secretary to act at the annual meeting. The Guiding Star Juvenile Temple of Good Templars held their fortnightly meeting on Friday evening in the Friendly Societies' Hall, South Dunedin. Sis. Newall superintendent, Bro. Hunt C.T. Two candidates were initiated. The Hope of Caversham Lodge paid a friendly visit, and were heartily welcomed. The election of officers, conducted by the D.S.J.T. and Bro. H. Stubbs, resulted as follows:—C.T., Bro. Ruston; V.T., Sis. Thorn; C., Sis. South; secretary, Bro. J. Cormack; F.S., Bro. Marshall; I\, Bro. Jones; G., Bro. Fail; S., Bro. Childs. A singing and reciting contest—Sis. Thorn and Bro. Dalton judges—was a most enjoyable event. First prize (singing), Sis. Kennedy, who rendered " Tho fisherman and his child"; Bro. Childs second, who sang "For old times sake"; recitation—First prize Sis. South, who recited ouv motto "Faith, hope, and charity." Second prizes were also awarded to Bros. South aud Osborne. Bro. Clarkson (Hope of Caversham), Bro, Dalton (G.M., Pioneer), Bro. Stubbs (L.D.,» Alliance), Bro. Yates, P.C.T., and Bro. South (Evergreen) spoke to the good of the order, and responded for 1 the visitors.

The fortnightly session of the Star of Freedom Lodge, 1.0. G.T., was held in the 1.0.0. F. Hall, Hoslyn, on Wednesday, Bro. Whale, P.C.T., in the chair. Bro. Whale alluded to the loss sustained through the death of many illustrious men and women during tho past few years, but none had left a gap like that occasioned by the loss of our beloved Queen. He moved a resolution, which was seconded by Bro. Scoullar, and carried in silence, the lodge stauding—" That thia lodge express their deep sympathy at the sad loss to the Empire by the death of our beloved Queen, and repose the greatest loyalty and confidence in King Edward VII, trusting he will follow in the footsteps of his revered mother." On resuming, seven members were received into the ledge and two candidates initiated. Bro. Scoullar, L.D., intimated that the G.L. degree would this G.L. session be conferred on eligible members in Dunedin. The nomination and election of lodge officers for the ensuing quarter resulted as follows:—C.T., Bro. E, Sell; V.T., Sis. A. Anderson; secretary, J. Strackan, jun.; T., Sis. Randall (re-elected); F.S., Bro. T. Paterson; C,, Sis, L. Sell; 11, Sis. M. Henderson; 1.G., Bro. Hitt; S., Bto., Spears; S.J.T., Sis. Whale, sen.; D.M., Sis. N. Whale; P.C.T., Bro. Whale. Tho lodge adjourned for harmony, a number of sacred songs and.recitations in memory of our late Queen being given. Yotes of thanks to the visitors were responded to by Bro. Dalton (Pioneer) and Bro. Lewis (Lily of the Valley). It was resolved that the lodge remain in mourning for oiie month.

The fortnightly meeting of Linda Rebekah Lodge was hold in the Oddfellows' Hall, Soslyn, on January 26. The N.G., before proceeding with the business, made reference to the late Queen, and it was resolved to place in-the iniuutes the lodge's deep regret at the loss the nation had sustained by the death of ber Majesty. The lodge room was draped in mourning. Tho installation ceremony was next proceeded with, the installing officers being Bro. G. Crichtou, G.M.; Ero. J. S. Alexander, G.T., Acting-Grand Warden; Bro. L. Kemnitz, S.D.G.M., Acting-Grand Marshal, l'ta officers installed were:—P.N.G., Sis. Lunn; ?\g., Sis. Livingstone; V.G., Sis. Paterson; secretary, Sia. fiurston (re-elected); treasurer, Sis. Hayward (re-elected); Sis. Paterson, R.S.N.G.; Sis. N. Smart, L.S.N.G.; Sis. Kemnitz, warden; Sis. E. Smart, conductor; Sis. Auld, 1.G.; Sis. Eason, R.S.V.G.; Sis. Duff, L.S.V.G. The G.M. congratulated the officers on the position attained by them, and especially mentioned the work dono by tiie P.N.G., Sis. Lunn. Tho elective officers thanked the members. Votes of thanks to visitors were replied to by Sis. Reid (Ruth) and Sis. Chapman (Miriam), and that to the Grand Lodge was replied to by Bro. Alexander, G.T.

At the weekly meeting of Evergreen Lodge, 1.0. G.T., held in tho P.A. Lodge Room (Bro. M'Lean, C.T., in the chair), the following resolution, moved by Bro. Berry and seconded by Bro. South, was unauiinously passed: — '■ That the lodge desire to express their deepest sorrow at tho sad loss that the Empire has sustained through the death of our late beloved Sovereign." The usual vote' of thanks to the -visitors was responded to by Bro. Stubbs (Alliance).
