RACING. The Wellington Racing Club's Summer meeting opened on January 22. The Cup was won by the Hon. J. I). Ormonds Renown (who went out a warm favourite} ia 2min 35 2-ssec, this being a New Zealand record for the distance—one mile and a-half.-Captain Russell's Coeur de Lion ran second and Mr Y. Harris's Paladin third. The dm-, dend on the totalisator was £2 4s. The Wei* lesley Stakes, of 300sovs, the next most important event of the day, was won by Mr G. G. Stead's Menschikoff, with Mr WatU Indian Queen second. At the second day's racing the attendance was considerably reduced. The Wellington Racing Club's Handicap of 400sovs, was won by Mr D. Gordon's Boreas, who paid a dividend on the machine of £9 10s. Mr Harding's Materoa ran second. The Wellington Stakes, 300sovs, also fell to Mr Stead's Menschikoff, who was bracketed on the machine with his stable mate Cuneiform, and paid £1 4s. The sum of £27,180 was put through the totalisator for the two days'racing, as compared with £29,743 for the same meeting last year. The Dunedin Jockey Club has received good entries for the Autumn, meeting, the number being an advance of 14 over those of last year. N.Z. BOWLING ASSOCIATION'S TOURNAMENT. The New Zealand Bowling Association's ■ annual tournament was commenced in Christchurch on the 14th ult., and brought to ft close on the 18th, the visitors having been most hospitably entertained. One day was devoted to the match North v. South, the prize being a banner or some suitable trophy to be held by the winning side. That the gathering of bowlers was a representative one is shown by the fact that the following clubs were represented:—Auckland, New Plymouth, Wanganui, Fielding, Palmerston North, and three clubs from Wellington—all from the North Island. " The South Isknd clubs represented were Canterbury, Christchurch, Ashburton, Timaru, Oamaru, Dunedin, Kaituna, Caledonian, Roslyn, Green Island. Taieri, Palmerston South, Lawrence, and Milton. A series of three games were played, the South winning the first and second, and each side scoring 205 points in the third, the aggregate totals being South 631, North 559. In the final in the. rink tournament the Christchureh Club's rink, consisting of W. Burnett, Wm. Gibb, A. Y. Bishop, and L. B. Wood (s), beat the Victoria Club's team, composed of T. B. Newton, G. Snaddon, W. B. Redston, and J. Brackenridge (s), by 20 pouts to 12; the Yictoria : team thus taking second place: In the pairs tournament T. Morris and W. M'Laren (Dunedin) 20 lieat W. H. Wanklyn and J. C. Maddison (Christchurch) 18, and the single-handed event was won by W. H. Brightwell (Newton) 21 points, who beat .T. C. Maddison (Christchurch) 13 points. The usual large gathering was present at the smoke concert in the evening.
