TRADES AND LABOUR.
INDUSTRIAL DISPUTES. The Conciliation Board have bad a busy time during the past few weeks in hearing the parties to industrial disputes. On January 22 the United' Boiler-makers and Iron Shipbuilders' Union of Otago came before the board with a reference filed against the Master Ironfounders of Otago and Southland. The demands of the union were in the direction of shorter hours of labour, increased wages, and the adjustment of matters relating to apprentices, overtime, etc. The Dnnedin and Suburban Operative Butchers' Union also filed a reference against the master butchers of edin and suburbs, containing similar demands, and the board, after hearing the parties, announced that they would give their decisions on February 2 and February 4- respectively. The Plasterers' Union also brought the master plasterers before the board to meet demands for increased wages, and a fourth dispute was. between the Otago Metal-workers' Assistants' Union and the master ironfounders. In this case the demands were for increased wages and regulations to deal with apprentices, holidays, and overtime. The board will make its recommendation in these cases oil Monday next.
