Wednesday, January 23. Cattle.—l 24 head yarded; a moderate supply, but sufficient for demand. Bidding was< lifeless, except for anything really .prime, and lastweek's rates wero not maintained. Byt bullocks sold at £8 15s to £9 15s; good, £7 10s to £3 10s; best cows and heifers. £6 10s to £7 15s; good, £5 5s to £6 ss.—Matheson, Prain, and Co. yarded 47 head of all classes, and sold: For Messrs Webster and Callander (Allanton), 6 bullocks at £8 10s to £7 6s; Mr A. Douglas (East Taieri), 2 bullocks at £717s 6d; Mr W. Townley (Higheliff), 8 cows and heifers at up to £5 7s Gd; Messrs Townley, M'Kay, M'Gill, Waldie, Fotd, Curie, and others, 2G head at current rates, and 5 calves at-15s to 365. Donald Reid and Co. Fat Calves.—Otngo Farmers' Co-operative Association (Limited) sold: For Mr Christopher O'Neill (M&kikihi, a draft ivt up to 41s cacli.
' Fat Sheep.—l93s forward, and although not by any means a largo entry, bidding was very slow, and prices fell away badly. Wethers show a drop of Is to Is 6d, and ewes 2s to 3s. The decline would probably have been worse had not a lew pens been turned .out unßold. Best wethers sold at 18s to 19s, a few extra up to 10s Dd; bcßt ewes, 15s to 17s; oxtra, iip to 18s. Matheson, Prain, and Co. penned 21, and sold: For Mr James Wyllie (Outram), 20 ewes at 17s to 15s, 60 wethers and ewes up to 18s 9d; Messrs Ford Bros. Country Sales.—The New Zealand Loan and Mercantile . Agency Company report having held their usual fortnightly sale, at Clinton on Thursday ' last, when 'they offered a good yarding of sheep to ft very large gathering of formers andltothers. Bidding was very brisk, and nearly all lines were disposed of at prices very satisfactory to vendors. They sold two-tooths to 16s lOd and four-tooths from 15s to 16s 3d. Prices were extremely good; in fact, it can be safely said that records were established all round in this respect, privately and publicly. They disposed of about 4500 sheep at top prices. On the following day at Balclutha they also held their fortnightly sale. Prices, as at Clinton, were satisfactory; but very few sheep were forward. Good cattle met with ready sale—bullocks to f:7 17s 6d; fat cows'to £6 10s; and others in proportion. Pigs, as usual, were somewhat hard to quit. Wool.—Advices indicate a continuance of the firmer tone recently established, and prospects are, if anything, a little brighter. Next sales take place on Thursday, 31st inst. Sheepskins.—Large catalogues were offered on Tuesday, and under good competition were cleared at satisfactory prices. Merino and finewoolled skins, if well saved, 4d to did per lb. Babbitskins.—Small lots offering, which are readily taken at full rates. Hides—Market is Elightly easier again. Best ox, 4d to <Jd per lb. Tallow and Fat.—All lots coming to hand are soon placed at recent rates. Grain.—Market is quiet, and very little business is being transacted. AYlieat: There is a fair demand for prime quality at 2s 5d to 2s GJd; medium is slow ot sale at 2s 2d to 2s 4d; fowl feed 'has a little better inquiry at un to 2s Id. Oats: Market fairly steady at. for best lines, Is 6d to Is GJd ; medium. Is 3d to Is sd; ■inferior, Is to Is" 2d. Barley; Quotations purely nominal,
Potatoes.—Heavier supplies have caused a. jUbstantinl Recline in prices and an uncertain market. Best kidneys up to £4 10s. _ Chafl— Prime quality scarce, and is in good demand at £2 12s 6d to £-2 15s; medium and inferior difficult to place.

Wheat.—The demand is not very active, buyers in the meantime holding off the market. "We quote: Best velvet, 2s 6d to 2s 7d; medium, 2s 3d to 2s sd; best Tuscan, 2s 6d to 2s 7d; medium, 2s 3d to 2s 5(1; fowl wheat is readily placed from Is lid to 2s Id. Oats: There has been a good demand during the week at quotations. _We quote - Best feed, Is 6d; medium, and inferior, Is 2d' to Is 5Jd; Suthorlands, Is 6d to Is GJd per bushel. ley: Thero is .little business passing.* Peed sorts arc quoted at Is 3d to Is 63; milling, la 6d to Is lOd; prime malting, 2s 3d to 2s 6d; Lakes., lis Gd to 3s for primest samples, but medium qualities are only saleable at low prices. Ryecom is readily placed from Ds 3d to 2s 4d. Maize,'2s 9d to 2s lOd per bushel. Prussian blue peas, 4s 6d per bushel.' Scotch and English tares. 5s 6d per -bushel. Flour: We quote £6 10s. Oatmeal in 25's, £9 10s. Pearl barley, £10 10s. Bran, £3 10s. Mlard, £4. Ne.'son tops are quoted at lOd to lid (f.0.b.). Chaff- Prime quality .is wanted from £2 7s 6d to £2 10?; extra heavy, £2 12s 6d; medium, £2 to £2 ss. Ryegrass: Buyers' ideas of values are: For farmers' dreSßed, Is 2d to Is sd; extra, to Is 9d; machined. 2s to 2s 3d; extra, 2s 6d to 3s per bushel. We have a good inquiry. Cocksfoot, 2|d to 3d for farmers' lots, and 3Jd to 4d for machined. Linseed, £10 *to £12. Pressed straw. 27s Cd. Clover hay, £3 to £3 6s. Nitrate of soda, £15. Clovers, rape, etc., all fresh. Potatoes—Soiling at 4s to 5s per cwt. Supplies not coming to hand so plentifully, prices havo a tendency to firm. Hides, 3Jd to 4id, according to weight and condition. Tallow.—Rough fat, lis 6d to 12s Gd; rendered. 15s to 18s. Horsehair, Is 2d to Is 4d. Sheepskins.—Crossbreds, 3s 3d to 4s; extra, to 4s 6d, PeltS, 6d to Is. We held our usual sale of skins on Tuesday, when thero was a fair demand. ' Rabbitskins.—Only small quantities are now coming forward. Competition, however, is keen, and prices satisfactory. Summer, from Gd to 8d; small, 3d to sd; autumns, 9d to lid; early winters, llsd to 14d; winters, 14d to lGd; selected, lGld to 17d per lb. Wool.—Our next sale will on January 31. We have now erected a complete clover-clean-iig plant, and all our other machinery up-to-date is the finest plant in the Southern Hemisphere. Farmers are invited to inspect. Please consign to our siding.' We' are agents for Newton's patent wool press, which wo offer at £13 each; can be inspected in our store. ' Gibson's cattle brand, 9s for small and 15s for large tins.
