Among flie passengers by (lie schooner Vwibft], \vhich arrived from Nine (Savage Island) this morning, was a friend of the King of Nine, by name Kalapi, wliobcirs a, letter of introduction to the Hon. Mr Seddon. WELLINGTON, January 16. The returns issued by the Eegistrargeneral's Office show that 2758 persons arrived in the colonv dnrinff December and that 3576 loft, against 2200 and 1236 respectively in December of 1899. The six leading candidates for the Victoria College scholarships are as follows, the njimes being in order of merit: — Eunhemia' Lav/ (WcH'niffton), 1485; Mary Falia (Westnort). .1439; Arthur Cathie (Te Arn). 13°3 ; Els'o Morrison (Masterton), 1366: Robert.
