THE WOOL SALES.
Press Association—By Telegraph—Copyright. LONDON, January 15. (Received Jan. 16, at 9.26 a.m.) The wool sales have opened, and there is a brisk demand. Merinos have advanced from 5 to 7£ per cent. January 16. (Received Jan. 16, at 10.40 p.m.) Messrs Balme, Buxton, and Jacomhs's joint catalogue comprised 7826 hales. There was a crowded attendance of buyers. A good selection of merinos was offered, for which there was strong Continental competition at from 5 to % per cent, above the November rates. Crossbreds were in less demand. Fine brought from par to 5 per cent, in advance. The National Mortgage and Agency Company of Now Zealand (Limited) yesterday received the following cablegram from their London office, dated London, 15th inst. :— "The wool sales opened at an avpratre advance of 5 per cent, for merino (all descriptions), and nlso 5 per cent, for finest crossbred. The market is likely to remain steady for these descriptions. The market is unnhancrcd for crossbred, fine and medium, and the future of the market for these sorts is uncertain."
