GENERAL WHITE IN ACTION.
DEATH OF COLONEL LAING. THE BOERS DRIVEN BACK. LONDON, January 15. General While, on the 3rd, sent Colonel Laing, with 150 of Kitchener's bodyguard, attached to General Knox's column, towards Eeilz. • While they were ascending the valley they experienced showers of explosive bullets from the kopjes 600 yards on their right and left. The Boers numbered 1000, and the British on retiring met 500 other Boers. Thoy galloped into a donga, and fought from under cover desperately. Colonel Laing was shot through the heart, The enemy then surrounded the small force, who maintained a dogged resistance, till the Boers threatened to kill the survivors. Lieutenant Batteson galloped through tho Boers and informed General White, who promptly sent reinforcements, andshelled the disappearing enemy, killing 17 of them at one shot.
