WAITAHUNA, December 21.
Tuesday was the hottest day we have had within the memory of the oldest residents.
The Waitahuna. School was closed for the holidays on Wednesday, Miss Amy West securing Mr Garden's annual prize of 2s 6d for the best tempered girl, and Master John M'Taggart 2s Gd for-the best tempered boy in the school, tho question being decided by a vote of their schoolmates. On Thursday the annual picnic was held, and, the day being fine, there was, as usual, a large attendance, the young people not dispersing until after 9 o'clock, having thoroughly enjoyed the da/s outing.
I noticed in the Daily Times of the 21st a reference to the turnip fly and its ravages, one settler at "Whenuakari having to sow his crop dive times. I have heard of one or two settlers in this district who had to sow their crop twice over; but they seem inclined to blame the seed ior the failure, -whereas this turnip fly may, be the cause, of the; cropinot.coming on.
