INDEPENDENT ORDER OF ODDFELLOWS.

A meeting of residents of Mornington was held in.the local Council Chambers last evening, with the object of establishing a lodge of the Independent Order of Oddfellows in that district. Mr James Michie/ a P.G-.M. of the order, presided, and called upon D.G.M. Bro. J. T. Kemnitz and G.S. Bro. William -Eeid, who explained the aims and objects of the society, and the advantages, cocial and material, of becoming members. The D.D.G.M., in his opening remarks, distinctly stated that in desiring to obtain a footing in the Mornington district, the order entertained no spirit of opposition to other societies, with which his society always worked harmoniously. The G-.5., Bro. Reid, pointed out that- those becoming members of the 1.0.0. F. would join a society whose financial position was beyond doubt, and which, from a social and fraternal point of view, was all that could be desired. Mr D. Nicol, a member of the order of 20 years' standing, also spoke with reference to the personal advantages conferred on him by being a member of the order. After an" informal discussion, a jesolution was carried, on the motion of Mr J. Garside, seconded by Mr Joseph Holgate, affirming the desirability. of forming a lodge in •the Mornington district, and a number of signatures were appended to a. petition to the Grand Lodge. It is quite probable that a strong lodge will be opened in the district in a few. weeks. *
