MINING.

Mr J. F. Harper, secretary of the Gold Queen Dredging Company, received, the following telegram from the dredgemaster yesterday afternoon:—"Started dredging 12.30; all going well." " -

At a special meeting of directors of the Charlton Valley Gold Dredging Conipany (Limited) held yesterday, tenders were accepted for tho supply and erection of the dredge and pontoons at satisfactory prices.

Referring to the recent case in the Supreme Court, Myers v. Harvey, when a verdict was given against the latter for £148 2s 6d, as Mr ■Harvey is a member cf the Dunedin Stock Exchange, the matter was investigated by the members of the exchange, and tbe following resolution was passed : —" Vhat this exchange is qf opinion that Mr Harvey committed "a serious indiscretion- in taking Mr Myers's shares to supply his over-sale, instead of selling them on tlie exchange, but inasmuch as Mr Harvey returned Mr" Myers the full market value ofthe shares, the exchange cannot find that his conduct has been in any way dishonourable."

The Cromwell Times hears that advantage is being taken of the presence of a professional diver in the- district by, the Alpine Dredging Company to try a novel experiment. Last year when the company were on a rich run of gold ■near Gibraltar Rock the dredge was unable to get in close.enough to follow it up. It is presumed that a quantity of the precious metal was left behind, and the company intend to send the diver down to try and recover it. The experiment will be watched with much interest.

An Auckland telegram states that the Waitekauri return for six weeks was bullion valued at £8525, from 3551 tons of ore treated.
