| A meeting of the Port Clialmer3 employees j of the Union Steam Ship Company was held '■ yesterday afternoon, Mr.John Cook presid-. ing. It was unanimously resolved to present ■ two horses to the Otago Rough Riders. They are to be named " Mararoa " and ''Rotomahana" respectively, and Port Chalrtjers employees lylio pass the necessary tests are to have the first pull on them : failing such recruitß, the moneys are to go toother Port volunteers who may be accepted. May they bring as much credit to their company a*3 their worthy namesakes have earned for the Union Company. I At a meeting of teachers on Thursday night I last week the committee met and drew up a < circular, copies of which were, through the courtesy of Mr Pryde, posted on Saturday. i. The teachers throughout the province have, as was expected, risen to the occasion, and the i treasurer (Mr Eudey) has now in hand £16 17s 6d. This amount came in in two days, and when it is remembered that almost all teachers are also contributing locally, the re, 'suit so far is very gratifying. The teachers aim at providing two horses and outfits, ant] to judge from the liberal response- so far. there is no doubt that they will succeed in their effort. It is particularly gratifying to know that some of the young ladies in small country schools are responding liberally, three iof them remitting £1 each. A complete list ■ of the contributing schools will be published I in a clay or two. j The Waiwera committee collected £150, . with which they have decided to fully equip ' Albert Clements, of'Ashley Downs, and WU r liam Clark and Charles Duff Burgess, of Balclutlia. To-night's popular concert at Port Chalmers promises to be an onthusiatic success.
