PICNIC AND SPORTS.
'THE BUTCHERS' OUTING. That popular resort for picnickers, Evansdale, was the place chosen this year for the Butchers' picnic, which was held on Tuesday. The weather was all that could be desired, and consequently a good number—about GOO—availed themselves of the excursion. A special train was despatched from Dunedin about 9 o'clock and picked up the Port Chalmers butchers at the last-named place, Evansdale ljcing reached in good time. A sports programme was carried out, which provided keen competition in the various events; while dancing was indulged in by a large number during the day. After tea had been partaken of a start was made on the return journey, and Dunedin was reached about 8 o'clock, everyone being thoroughly pleased with the outing. , A word of praise is due to the committee, who were indefatigable in carrying out their numerous duties. The secretary (Mr J. AY. Thomas) also assisted materially iii making the picnic the success it-was; while the staiter (Mr P. Gibson) and the handicapper (Mr J. Graham) performed their 'duties well. Mr J. Bethune's Band rendered several selections during the clay, which were highly appreciated by those present. The following are the results of the various races:— Boys' Race (under 14).—L. Thomson 2, W. Dow 3 Visitors' Race (ladies).—Mrs Mason 1, Mrs Young 2, Mrs Hiokey 3. Shop and Small-goods Hands' Race.—W. Higginson .1, AY. Blackio 2, J. W. Thomas 3. Master Butchers' Race.—E. Bottinp 1, E. Botting 2, J. Betting 3. Butchers' Wives' Race—Mrs K. Bottinc 1, Mrs" Higginson 2, Mrs W. Samson 3. Three-legged Race.—Wilkms and Higginson Butchers' Race (married).—P. Gibson 1, W. Samson 2. Bandsmen's. Race.—J. Bethime 1. Slaughtermen's Race.—W. Falconer 1, R. Clark 2, J. Dow 3. Tug-of-war (Married v. Single).—The married men won. ■ Consolation Race.—J. Smith I*' Newman 2. The 'children attending the Port Chalmers District High School, accompanied by the teachers, several members of the school committee, and a number of friends, were taken on their annual excursion to Evansdale yesterday by special train. The Port Chalmers Band, under Mr M'Connell, also went.
