ROWING.
The'final heal of the Otago Rowing Association's Inter-cluh Eighl-oar Race [or the Challenge Cup presented by the past and present presidents of the association—Messrs J. White and C. P. M. BuUerworth—was rowed oft last evening, and resulted in, the Port Chalmers Rowing Club becoming the holders of the cup for the present season. All the clubs, with the exception of the Queen's Drive Boating Club, have taken part in the contest, the first heat being won by the Dunediti Amateur Boating Club, who defeated the Otago Rowing Club's representatives. The second heat was won by the North-End crew, who were successful over the Dunedin, and the third heat went to the Port Chalmers Club through default, the Queen's Drive men not being able to take part. The North-End and Port Chalmers were thus left to fight out the final. The Port Chalmers. Club put in an appearnr.ee shortly after G p.m.,.'but it was after 7 o'clock before the crews pd'ddled down to the starting point together. Mr Hodgkins (captain 0.R.C.) had no difficulty in starting the boats. The North End crew led for a distance, bu? gave way to Port, who rowed splendidly when they reached enhner water. Higgins urged on his.men, and led into the wharves, and until close on the finishing line the boats were level. About 10 yards from home the Port crew made n. final effort, and lauded their bow canvasovcr the line before the North End. The judge (Mr Buticrworth) gave his decision as a win for Port Chalmers by Gft. Both crews seemed to have had enough.when they finished. The Clews were: — Port Chalmers Rowing Club.—if. Abrim (4), P. Rustou (5), \Y. Knowles (6), J. Mitchell (7), M. Higgins (stroke). The Port men came in for some hearty appiause from tile spectators for their plucky exhibition. This afternoon the Dunedin Amateur Boating Club hold one of their popular " ladies' days," when the lady friends of the chili are the guests of the members. A long programme of boat racing and water sports is to take place, after which refreshments will be served out aivd a musical programme will be gone through. A dance in the evening will wind up the day's proceedings. * : :,
