LATE MINING.
NOTES FROM LYELL. (From Oub Own Correspondent.) . '■ : • ■ LYELL, .February 9. ■■. The Mine-Mannger of the Alpine mine reports as follows:-. The No. 7 level has been redriven 12[t for the week,, makin;; a total distance to datw of 102 ft. The ground.is very' broken, and fullof old timber, thus making progress slow. The solid face may now bo met with at any time in stoping south above this level. We have met with the old stopes, and are now rising to ascertain it any stone exists higher up. Stoping is still progressing in. the north extension of No. .11 level. The reef varies from 3Ct to.sft in width. In the stopes above the intermediate between Nos. 10 and 11 levels south the reef is from lft to 4ft in width, and of fine quality. In "the south end of No. 10 level the winze has been sunk a total distance of 17ft. The width of the reef is 7ft. Two men are driving stope from the winze 30ft below No. 11 level north. The reef is Oft wide, but so far theve is no indication of its being under foot. The quantity of stone sent to the battery for this week is 180 tons. The return from the battery (top plates only) is 7710z amalgam from 220 tons crushed.
