DUNEDIN CHAMBER OF COMMERCE.

The monthly meeting of the Chamber of Commerce, held yesterday afternoon, was attended by Messrs Moloney (president). C. W. Rattray, D. Sturrock, J. M.' Gallaway, John Wright, and A. C. Begg. Mr W. E. Reynolds forwarded. an. apology for his absence.

The General Manager of tlio New Zealand railways .wrote asking for. the chamber's opinion with respect to reducing the weightof. bags of grain from . 2401b to 2001b. Enclosed with the memo, .was a copy of a letter from the New Zealand branch of the British Medical Association, condemning the use of the 2401b sack.—The Wellington' Chamber of Commerce also wrote soliciting an opinion on the subject.—The matter was referred to a sub-committee to report to a future meeting.

Correspondence with reference to the question of delivery goods without production of the bills of lading was read and received.

The Secretary of the General Post Office sent a reply to the chamber's letter with reference to the arrival and departure of the San Francisco mail' at and from Duuedin. Ho regretted that the department, did i-.ofc see its way at present to improve the position, but .promised to give the chamber's representations further consideration.

Mr H. C. Cameron, produce commissioner* in London for the New Zealand Government, wrote with reference to a report concerning a recent shipment of New Zealand fruit ex the s.s. Papanui, .which had been reprinted from a London paper. The report was utterly wrong, and the paper, had since retracted and acknowledged that the consignment had j been carefully looked after by Mr Cameron. —Received. ...

The Nelson Chamber of Commerce sent a copy of a resolution passed by them, urging the Government to take steps to set up a commission to go into the question of federation. They - requested .the co-operation of the Dunedin chamber in the matter. —The matter was left open lor. a'subcommittee "to reply to. ' •'••'.' It was resolved to donate,the usual prizes to the, Boys' Sotool.
