UNIVERSITY STUDENT CHRISTIAN UNION.
Tho vitality of the local branch of il*» movement that, in recent years has made itself a force in the university circles of the world ■ was very manifest last night in the social tendered.to all the new students entering on class work for the year. The sight of so many bright faces, among which were those of students taking high rank in their faculties, was quite inspiring. The union may congratulate itself on the thorough success of its effort last night. The hall of the Y.W.C.A., attractively arranged for sociable grouping, was taxed to its utmost capacity. The speaking was excellent and to tho point, the musical items well chosen, and the refreshments capital. Mr Spence, the president of the union, was in the chair, and he was supported by the forcible addresses of the Revs. J. Gibb, W. Saunders, and Dean Fitchett. The musical items comprised solos—" Crossing .the bar," by Miss Ca-lder, and "Angels "ever bright ,and fair," by Miss Allen;, a duet, "Nocturne," by Missesßule and Robertson; and a quartet, " Suabian Volkslied." Plenty of time was given for introductions and-op-portunities to begin friendships, and the two hours' slipped past on wings. The proceedings were brought to a. close by a vote oi thanks, proposed by Professor Salmond; coupled with a word of kindly advice and encouragement^ after which the doxology wai sung, and the gathering dispersed. ■ ■ ;
