THE LIQUOR LAWS.

Press Association—By Telegraph—Copyright.

LU.uJON, April 13.

Viscount Peel has resigned his position as chairman and member of the Royal Commission on the Liquor Licensing Laws in consequence of the " moderates" wishing to reopen settled points which recognised vested interests in connection with the question of compensation.

The Royal Commission was appointed on April 25, 1896, "to inquire into the operation and administration of the laws relating to the sale of intoxicating liquors, and to examine and report upon the proposals that may be made for amending the aforesaid laws in the public interest, due regard being had to the rights of individuals." Viscount Peel was chairman. Up to the end of last year the commission had held 123 sittings and examined 2GO persons. The taking of evidence was completed in July last. A draft report had been drawn up by the chairman, and was submitted to the commission this year, but has evidently met with considerable opposition.
