WAIPAHI AS A SITE FOR FREEZING WORKS.

TO THE EDITOE.

Sir, —A great many people think and say that a country village is ruined by the nolicense system. Well, lam not going to touch on that side of the question on this occasion ; but I think the question of an industry of some other nature would give far more employment. As I keep my mind always occupied in the welfare of our colony and country villages, there are a few of them that I pass through daily I notice want something to give! work to their people. Well, here is not only a chance for them to lay out a few pounds, but also to outsiders who have a few pounds to spare. The township of Waipahi has a beautiful river passing through it and it is the centre of a great sheep and rabbit district; so that if a freezing works were started on the banks of the river it would in due time, I am sure, pay handsomely. There would be no great expense other than for building and machinery. There is water all the year round and a railway close at hand, and, as I have already said, there are sheep and rabbits in abundance. By having such so close" at hand, the rabbits could be exported in such a condition that no fault would be found such as I notice has been found through the carcases being knocked about in going so far by rail before being frozen. I am sure such an industry in the place I have mentioned is well worth the consideration of men engaged in that line of business. See for yourselves, make inquiries, and you will find what I ray ie correct. —I am, etc. -D. Nicol. p'!s.— Balclutha is also well adapted for the purpose, .
