ANNIVERSARY DAY AT WELLINGTON.

YACHTING AND SWIMMING SPORTS.

(Per Unitjsb Press Association.)

WELLINGTON, January 23.

There was splendid weather for the anniversary. Rain during the night laid the dust, and the day was fine—not too hot, with a light breeze. A great number of people went to Plimmerton and other seaside resorts. The principal festivities, besides the race meeting, were the swimming sports and yacht races. In the 100 yds Swimming Championship of New Zealand seven competed, and the event was won by Edwards (of Christchurch) by a head from Truscoit (of Christchurch), the present champion, with Stokes (of Christchurch) third two feet away, and the others close up. The time, 69 4-ssec, is a record for the celony. There were only two entries in the Senior Yacht Racej these being the Maritana and Waitangi. The breeze was too light at the start; and. the Maritana gave up. In the Handicap Race the same two entered, but the' Maritana had a walk over. In the junior races there were good entries.
