CHRISTCHURCH, January 16.

At Oxford to-day W. T. Burnip. was fined 40s on each of two' charges, with £3 12s costs, for serving drink to men who were in a state of. intoxication.

At the Magistrate's Court to-day Gilbert and Robert "Lennox were committed for trial on a charge of stealing 91 sheep of the value of £45 10s, the property of W. Acton-Adams. Charles Lennox was com"mitted for trial on a charge of stealing 28 , sheep, also th*e property of W. Acton- . Adams.

A conference was held to-day between representatives of the present Board of Trustees of the Samaritan Home and representatives of the contributing local bodies with a view to arriving at a compromise regarding representation on the board. The position was that the voluntary contributors elected six trustees before the local bodies were made contributors. Then the local bodies elected five trustees. .The act provides for nine seats, and • there were thus 11 trustees elected. The voluntary contributors contended that until the local bodies had contributed for. the year they were not1 entitled to elect .representatives, as the act provides that the basis of representation should rest on the amount contributed during the past financial year, and so far the home has had no legal financial year. One trustee has resigned on account of ill-health, and a compromise was effected by which two members appointed by the contributing bodies will resign, the present board electing one to fill thd vacancy. The balance of representation is thus practically even.. ■ The Hon. John M'Kenzie and party left this morning for the Hanmer Plains. The applications for the position of local manager of the New Zealand Farmers' Cooperative Association were considered on Saturday, and it was decided not to make any appointment from amongst the present applicants.
