(Received Dec. 20, at 9.30 a.m.) Tho Chinese interpret the arrival. of. the British '. cruiser Iphigenia at Nanking as an indication of the intention of.. Great Britain ,to oppose the proposed active enforcement of French claims'. ■ The Chinese requested a respite, after the French Minister had threatened an invasion of the country by French troops unless the rebels released the French missionary. Notwithstanding this request a French expedition is proceeding towards Kwei-chau-fu, on the Yang-tse-Kiang. The treaty port of Ichang is also threatened with attack. (Received Dec. 20, at 1.10 p.m.) British, American, German, and Japanese merchants at Shanghai sent to their respective Ministers at Pekin identical protests against the exclusive extension of the French concessions at Shanghai.
