THE YARRA MYSTERY. . MELBOURNE, December 20.. (Received Dec. 20, at 9,30 a.m.) The box containing the body found in the Yarra bears the name of T. R. Akins printed on the lid. The police have been informed that a young married woman named Theresa Rebecca Akins, answering to the description of the victim, is missing. She recently wrote to a friend that she. was coming for a holiday to Melbourne.

THE PETERSHAM TRAGEDY,

SYDNEY, December 20,

(Received Dec. 21, at 1 a.m.) At the inquest in connection with the death at Petersham of the girl Dutt and her grandmother, a verdict "of wilful murder a<?ainst Briggs was returned. A letter was found in his possession stating that he shot the girl because he thought she was false to him, and her grandmother because she prevented him seeing the girl. THE jION. J. G. WARD. . ■ The Hon. J. G. Ward was entertained by Parliamentarians on both sides of the House, and has left for Melbourne. THE TICK PEST. BRISBANE, December 20. (Received Dec. 20, at 9.30 a.m,) ■ The Government expert has made experiments with wood scour,, recently declared to he effective in destroying ticks in cattle. He found that, though it appeared to kill the ticks and cleanse the cattle, they shortly became reinfected. DROWNED hi NATIVES. (Received Dec. 21, at 1 a.m.) While Peter PoulsOn was'returning from Rocky Island lightship to Cooktown thenative crew drowned him and seized the boat. It is supposed they have gone to Night Island.
